SESSION 10
What is Mission?
1. The Great Commission – Our Call to Mission

Key Verse: Matthew 28:19-20
Jesus calls us to:
-
Go and make disciples of all nations
-
Baptise them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
-
Teach them to obey His commands
-
Trust that He is with us always
Missio Dei – The Mission of God
-
Mission begins with God, not us (Matthew 6:10)
-
Our role is to join in what God is already doing in the world
Discussion:
-
What does “being on mission” look like in your life right now?|
2. Three Approaches to Mission
1. Relational Mission
-
Building genuine, long-term relationships
-
Jesus modelled this by spending time with people from all walks of life
-
Listen, be present, and share your faith naturally in relationships
2. Incarnational Mission
-
Representing Christ in everyday life (John 1:14)
-
Living out faith through love, service, and justice
-
Demonstrating God’s love in action
3. Proclamation Mission
-
Clearly sharing the message of the gospel (Romans 10:14)
-
Includes preaching, teaching, testimonies, and conversations
Reflection:
-
Which of these approaches comes most naturally to you?
-
Which would you like to grow in more?
3. Avoiding Common Traps in Mission
-
The Saviour Complex
-
It’s not our job to “fix” people—Jesus is the Saviour
-
Trust that God is already at work (Acts 1:8)
-
-
Fearmongering & Argumentative Evangelism
-
Share truth in love, not fear (Romans 2:4)
-
Defend the faith with gentleness (1 Peter 3:15)
-
-
The Trap of Silence
-
Fear can prevent us from speaking about Jesus
-
The Holy Spirit empowers us to share (Acts 1:8)
-
Reflection:
-
Do you ever feel pressure to “save” or convince people?
-
How can trusting that God is at work change your approach to mission?
4. Who Is My Neighbour? (Luke 10:25-37)
-
Jesus redefines ‘neighbour’ in the Parable of the Good Samaritan
-
Our neighbour is anyone in need, regardless of background or differences
-
Wherever God has placed you is your mission field
-
Jesus calls us to “Go and do likewise”
5. Mission for Everyone – No Undeserving People
-
The Myth of the Undeserving Poor (Martin Charlesworth & Natalie Williams) challenges societal attitudes toward poverty
-
Everyone is made in the image of God and loved by Him
-
Mission involves justice, mercy, generosity, and seeing people through God’s eyes
Reflection:
-
How do culture and upbringing shape the way we treat others?
-
How can we allow the Holy Spirit to transform our perspective?
Final Reflection & Prayer
-
What is one key takeaway for you today?
-
How will you put it into action?
-
Pray for one another to receive the power of the Holy Spirit to step out in mission.
