SESSION 13
Spiritual Warfare
1. Jesus' Complete Victory
-
Key Truth: Jesus has won a total and complete victory over sin, death, and Satan.
-
Cultural Misconceptions: Many depictions of spiritual warfare in media are incorrect, portraying God and the devil in a pitched battle where outcomes are uncertain.
-
Biblical Reality:
-
On the cross, Jesus defeated sin, death, and Satan (Colossians 2:15).
-
Though they can still affect us, they no longer have power over our lives.
-
Group Discussion: Read Luke 8:26-36 and reflect on what it teaches about spiritual warfare.
-
-
Observations from Luke 8:26-36:
-
The demons recognize Jesus' authority.
-
Jesus commands them to leave, bringing freedom and restoration.
-
The encounter highlights God's compassion and kingdom power.
-
-
The 'Now and Not Yet' Kingdom:
-
Jesus' victory is already accomplished but will be fully realised upon His return.
-
Analogy: D-Day vs. VE Day – The decisive battle has been won, but we still experience conflict.
-
2. We Are in a War
-
Ephesians 6:12 – Our struggle is against spiritual forces, not just physical challenges.
-
1 Peter 5:8-9 – The devil seeks to destroy, but we are called to resist him.
-
Cruise Ship vs. Battleship Analogy:
-
The Christian life is not about comfort but active engagement in spiritual battle.
-
2 Timothy 2:3 calls us to be 'good soldiers' for Christ.
-
3. How Do We Fight?
-
Remember Jesus' Victory:
-
Matthew 28:18 – Jesus has all authority.
-
Luke 10:19 – Jesus has given His followers authority over the enemy.
-
James 4:7 – Resist the devil, and he will flee.
-
2 Corinthians 3:17 – Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
-
-
Read and Apply Ephesians 6:13-18 – The Armor of God:
-
Most of the armour relates to our identity in Christ.
-
The Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word) is our weapon.
-
-
Practical Steps:
-
Know Who God Is and Who You Are – Our identity in Christ is key to victory.
-
Know the Bible – Jesus used Scripture to rebuke Satan (Matthew 4:1-11).
-
Pursue Holiness – Unrepentant sin creates openings for the enemy.
-
Live by the Holy Spirit – Galatians 5:25 calls us to keep in step with the Spirit.
-
Pursue God – A life of prayer, Scripture, and dependence on God keeps us strong.
-
Pray Continually – Ephesians 6:18 instructs us to pray against evil and for the church.
-
4. Act and Do Something
-
Spiritual warfare is not just personal but also societal.
-
Speak up and act against injustice, oppression, and sin in the world.
-
Be advocates for righteousness in your workplace, home, and community.
-
Final Encouragement: Tom Wright – “Store scripture in your heart, keep your eyes on God, and say a firm ‘no’ to the voices that lure you back into darkness.”
